On Friday we spent the afternoon exploring seeds. First we made predictions about how many seeds we thought would be in the different fruits and vegetables. Then we opened them up and counted how many. We used a ten frame to help us keep track of our count. The honeydew had over 200 seeds! You can ask your kinder how many seeds were in the fruit or vegetable he/she was working with. After exploring and counting the seeds we made seed mosaics. You can ask your kinder to tell you about mosaics.
A teacher at Bells Mill shared this video with the staff and I thought it was great! I am will attach the video to this post. It explains why we have shifted math instruction. The concepts covered in the video are definitely beyond kindergarten but it still explains the thinking behind what we are doing. I hope you enjoy the video!
http://vimeo.com/110807219 Yesterday and today we worked on thinking fluently and taking intellectual risks to share different strategies we can use to count objects accurately. We know that the kinders can count objects up to 10 but the purpose of this activity is to count them ACCURATELY! We looked at pictures of different objects and shared the different ways we could count the objects accurately. When we looked at these objects we came up with TONS of different ways to count. It was amazing to hear the different ideas the kinders came up. Here are some of the strategies we can use to make sure we count each object only once.
1. Count the objects on the top, then the bottom 2.Make a connect the dot with the objects and start at the top and work our way around the boxes 3.Count the right side and then the left side. 4. Count the slanted ones and then the straight ones. 5. Count the three on the right and then the rest on the other side. Today was a very exciting day in kindergarten! We got to plant seeds!! We read a poem about seeds. We noticed that the poem went through the steps of how to plant a seed. We investigated the seeds before we planted and made a prediction about what they might grow into. We will keep you updated on the progress of our seeds.
We also started two experiments. We planted one seed that will get no sunshine and another seed that will get no water. We took an intellectual risk and made predictions about what we think will happen. You can ask your kinder what his/her prediction was and why. I sometimes wish there was another adult (or camera) in the room to catch the conversations and comments that happen in our class. I thought I would use the blog to share one of the highlights from this week.
Earlier this week we began our lesson on seeds. We started by sharing what we already know about seeds. We were surprised by how much we know about seeds! Next we brainstormed questions we have about seeds. One of the questions was, "Where do seeds come from?" This question was promptly answered by a kindergartener... "Seeds come from Home Depot!" |
