Writing
We use a writing workshop style format for our instructional block.
Here is what our block looks like:
Whole group lesson
Shared writing
Planning and sharing with a buddy
Independent writing
Sharing and celebrating
During writing workshop we focus on writing the sounds we hear, instead of worrying about spelling every word correctly. The goal during this time is for the kinders to feel like writers. If they have to constantly stop to ask how to spell a word the writing process is disrupted.
As the year progresses we do expect kindergarten words to be spelled correctly in our writing.
We will write many different kinds of texts. Here are some examples:
1. lists
2. letters
3. how-to books
4. informational reports
5. short stories
6. biographies

Food for thought....
Kindergarteners use sound spelling to help express thoughts in writing.
Here are our word wall words for the year. As we learn these words we add them to our word wall. Once they are added to the classroom word wall we expect the kinders to spell them correctly in their writing.
